Tuning

Tuning is the process of adjusting the tension of all the individual piano strings, in order to sound at the correct pitch and in proper relationship with each other.

I approach tuning with a four-stage, multi-pass procedure consisting of two complete passes through all strings (including raising or lowering pitch if necessary), followed by a fine-tuning pass through all unisons, and finishing with a final check and fine-tuning of all unisons as needed.

A tuning service call typically takes between an hour-and-a-half and two hours at the location, and my standard rate ranges from $116 to $140, depending on driving distance (with a discounted rate for piano or music teachers, and institutions such as schools and churches). This rate includes a service call to the piano's location, minor adjustments to the action and pedals if necessary, and a thorough tuning as described above. A discount is also given when making more than one service call in the same general area.

Please note that while some technicians have an additional charge for pitch-raising or pitch-lowering, this might be considered merely a preference in pricing structure, but is important to be aware of if you are comparing tuning rates.
